On the Island food and water is a very big need for us to survive. Explore the links below on the food pyramid, the different food groups, healthy eating, finding animals for food, water collection and finding water. Journal Entry Day 2 - Describe the 6 food groups and what foods you need to stay healthy. Report what you found for food. Explain how you found water and what you had to do to get the water.
Lesson 3 Shelter
Introduce concept of needing shelter for survival. Have you ever thought about how your house was made? Have you ever looked at what your house is made of? In this lesson you will be looking at all the different types of materials you can use to build a shelter with. Now because we are on a deserted island we can't use things like bricks and cement to build a shelter. You will need to think about all the materials you can find on the island that could be used to make a shelter. Explore the links below and examine the different types of shelters and how to make them. Journal Entry Day 3 - Describe the island materials you would use and the type of shelter you would build to protect yourself on the island, and how you would build it. This will help you on the island if you need to fix your clothes or if some material washes up on the shore and you can use it to make some new clothes. Explore the links below to find out how to make and repair your clothes. Journal Entry Day 4 - Describe the process of how you would fix an item on clothing that has been ripped or torn. Illustrate your entry with before and after pictures of your item of clothing.
Finished Product At the end of these four lessons, students will have an understanding of the basics needs of human survival. They will have a journal describing their understanding of the basic needs of human life. The journal will be written in first person point of view, as if the student is actually stranded on a deserted island and must survive until a rescue arrives. Students will have been exposed to research about:
The importance of food for our survival
The different types of food groups and the foods in each group
